Is Arijit Singh the New Kishore Kumar?

There are talented singers and then there is Kishore Kumar. His beautiful voice, quirky notes, and musical style left such an imprint in the hearts of music lovers that he will be remembered forever. It’s hard to compare anyone with Kishore Da’s enigmatic, multi-faceted persona, both personally and professionally, but a question has always been looming – have we found a new Kishore Kumar in our generation?

With an eclectic array of tracks sung over an eight-year-long musical career, Arijit Singh is one of the most talented and versatile singers out there. Hence, the question begs to be asked – could he be the one? Let’s take a look at the similarities between the two singers.

The incomparable personality of Kishore Kumar made him larger than life. Kishore Kumar excelled at everything he set out to do. Whether working as a lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenplay writer, or scriptwriter – there was nothing beyond his ability. The timeless charm of his songs still make them the top choice for radio shows even today. Loved by music listeners of all ages, he and his legacy have some of the most dedicated fan bases around the world; one of them even built a temple devoted to him in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh! There is also a Kishore Kumar Baug/Park named after him in Juhu, Mumbai. It’s as if his song “Chalte Chalte,” in which he urges listeners to remember his songs forever and never bid goodbye, has become a reality.

Before Arijit, numerous other singers, like Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, had their days in the sun and ruled the Indian film and music industry. The modest 31-year-old singer today is preferred by countless music directors in the industry and, almost every month, there is a new song released to which Singh has lent his vocals. Some of his latest tracks include “Wo Ladki”, “Mera Pyar Tera Pyar“, “Naina Banjare“, “Aahista“, and “Tera Fitoor.”

Currently, he tops almost all radio show charts with his melodious tracks, and he is JioSaavn’s number one artist, garnering hundreds of millions of plays per year. The Indian singer has so far earned 53 awards and 139 nominations in total.

He may have had his favorite genre, but Kishore Da always loved to experiment. His widespread charisma always attracted new opportunities for him to try out new tunes, complete with his famous yodeling. However, Arijit isn’t far behind. He is refreshing and his vocals seize every opportunity to blow his audience’s minds. For instance, the song “Channa Mereya” makes you feel the pain in the singer’s voice; it sounds like he knows what a broken heart feels like. On the other hand “Nashe Si Chadh Gayi” will get you in a party mode, with Arijit making sure to be playful with the tunes and pitches. “Kabira (Encore)” is one of his most popular tracks and the singer perfectly depicts the sorrow of a broken, wandering heart; and “Galti Se Mistake” will bring out the silliness in you and will remind you of Kishore Da’s playful vocals in songs like “Ek Chatur Naar Karke Sringar” from Padosan. Other signature tracks by Arijit include “Har Har Gange”, “Tukur Tukur”, “Saawali Si Raat”, and “Wat Wat Wat.”

Not many singers in the Hindi music industry have been able to keep up with the number of accolades won by Kishore Kumar  except Arijit Singh, who has earned three consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Playback Singer (Male). He first received the award in 2016 for “Sooraj Dooba Hain,” followed by Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Title Track,” and “Roke Na Ruke Naina” in the next two years. This feat was previously achieved only by Kishore Kumar and Kumar Sanu.

Love for Kishore Da

Over the years, Arijit has revealed that he has always been inspired by numerous legendary singers, but one name that has been constant is of Kishore Kumar’s, and there’s no wonder why! He’s a true icon whose legacy has certainly outlived him.

Having said all that, we believe that Arijit Singh has the talent and tenacity to match the magnificent persona of Kishore Kumar, over the course of his career. We can’t wait to see him continue his incredible journey.

While Arijit is at it, tune in to some of our favorite Kishore Kumar playlists – Fun Ka Dose – Kishore Kumar, Kishore Ka Khazana, and Kuch Ansune Taraane.
