Imagine being an Internet sensation, and then transitioning into a pop star. Amazing story, right? Now, imagine that in reverse. That’s the story of Baba Sehgal. Gen Y knows him from “Thanda Thanda Pani,” while Gen Z sings along to his hits like “Chicken Fried Rice” and “Going To The Gym.” Kirthi Shetty caught up with the man himself on the latest episode of Talking Music. Here’s what we learned.
1. He remembers all his lyrics… Even the old ones.
Baba Sehgal writes some crazy lyrics. But the fact that he remembers them all is even crazier. Even lyrics that he wrote over two decades ago rolled off his tongue effortlessly.
2. Baba made his way from Lucknow to Mumbai by car.
For a journey that’s over 1300 km, most of us would’ve taken the train or hopped on a flight. But, most of us aren’t Baba Sehgal. He made the journey on road in his Maruti 800, which by the way, had air conditioning. That was a big deal in the ‘90s.
3. He performed at Amitabh Bachchan’s 50th birthday party.
While Jaya Bachchan was planning her husband’s 50th birthday bash, she approached Baba Sehgal who, at the time, was one of Big B’s favourites. Amitabh was such a big fan that he got up on the stage and performed with Baba. The superstar even knew all the lyrics.
4. Vulgarity is not his cup of tea.
Baba doesn’t believe that he needs vulgarity to get him more views and streams. He believes in talking about subjects that will stand the test of time.
5. He worked with A.R. Rahman before he was THE A.R. Rahman.
When Baba Sehgal was rising to fame, he worked with a young, quiet composer. He recalls mocking him a little bit. He had no clue that the quiet boy would become a musical mastermind.
6. He still acts in movies.
While we might not see him in Bollywood films, he’s still rocking the big screen in Tollywood and Kollywood.
7. He’s a massive Kishore Kumar fan.
When we asked Baba about his inspiration to make the move from Lucknow to Mumbai, he replied without a second’s hesitation, saying that he wanted to be like his childhood hero Kishore Kumar.
8. He had a bit of crush on Pooja Bedi
While working with Pooja Bedi on his debut music video, Baba admits to being a little star-struck and attracted to his female co-star. To his disappointment, there were no sparks.
This was just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to know more about Baba Sehgal, then catch the full episode of Talking Music with Kirthi, only on Saavn.
