It’s rare for DJ Snake to perform to quick successive gigs in the same country, however, the French DJ and producer says that he had to make an exception for India. “I never normally go back anywhere so soon but to go to India during a holiday is about me learning more and more about a country I admire and respect,” he said in an exclusive interview with OnRecord.
His tryst with India began with the video for “Lean On“, which released over four years ago. Featuring the trio of Major Lazer and Danish singer-songwriter MØ, the video became a huge hit- partly due to the catchy tune, but also because of the video which was inspired from Indian culture.
He then released “Magenta Riddim” in early 2018, whose music video was shot in the famous Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. Equal parts hilarious and intriguing, DJ Snake embraces the usual outlandish Indian cinema action scenes we are used to. He talks about this video being the highlight of 2018, saying, “It sounded like the music, it looked like the music, I loved it!”
By this time, he often posted about India and was not afraid to show his love for the country. Speaking about what attracts him the most here, DJ Snake had a simple response, “Everything. The colors, smells, food, landscape, fashion, art, film. All of it.”
He further said that performing in India made him see the energy of the crowd in another way. “All fans all over the world give me love. But in India, I do feel like they treat me in a special way and I have to return that love,” DJ Snake added.
For a lot of artists, this is lip service. But DJ Snake put his money where his mouth is, and spent the 2018 new year’s eve performing in India. “It was the only place to be for me on December, 31 2018!” he proclaimed proudly.
He followed it up with a small video of his show on Instagram, titled “Dhanyavad”, thanking his fans who welcomed 2019 with the loudest concert possible.
He followed that up with a quick four-city tour spanning Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and New Delhi in March 2019, choosing to celebrate Holi here. All of these gigs were hits, and DJ Snake even met Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez at during the time spent in India.
The 32-year-old also puts up hilarious mashup videos of his songs with Indian movies on his Instagram. Two of his songs, Enzo and South Side, are featured on posts featuring Indian movies Hera Pheri and Mass, and have his followers in splits.
It is safe to say that his Holi tour was not the last we see of DJ Snake in India. When an artist takes so much time and effort to love a country, its effects are felt. For 2019, DJ Snake said that his goals and objectives were “creativity, growth and consistent love for India!” With multiple releases and a tour, it sure looks like he is not only meeting his expectations but smashing them!
