The Desi Hip-Hop Timeline
March 09, 2017 · 1 Minute Read
This three-part animated slideshow attempts to tell the story of the Desi Hip-Hop movement, through key moments, tracks, and albums from across South Asia and the Global South Asian Diaspora.
Today, hip-hop is an integral part of the Indian musical mainstream, with flourishing underground communities across the world. But it wasn’t always that way.
From underground to Bollywood, from up-and-comers to superstars, the Desi Hip-Hop timeline celebrates the movement’s diversity and plurality of languages and geographies. Featuring verses in Hindi, English, Hinglish, Punjabi, and Tamil by rappers from as far and wide as Chandigarh, Toronto, Chennai, London, and New York, Desi Hip-Hop has given the global South Asian community a voice, and a sense of musical and cultural identity.
