The leading lady of India’s underground talks about the witchy inspiration of her new EP and the popular DJ who was the catalyst for it all.
The latest music videos from Mumbai-based keys player, composer and beatsmith, Sandunes, provide an ambient journey inspired by New Orleans mysticism.
In her new audio-visual EP, each track is paired with an animated video for a rhythmic display of magic, tarot and the occult, drawing parallels with the esoteric hobbies of her grandparents. The EP, NOLA Daydream, is about identity, lineage, and accessing messages from those in the afterlife.
“The videos form a 4-part series, which tells the story of a young woman guided by intuition through a mental maze. In part it’s a metaphor for the sometimes unhelpful neurological fizz our minds create as we move through life,” Sandunes says.
The EP was conceived and recorded in New Orleans, and produced in Bombay. As Sandunes explains: “While touring the U.S. with Pretty Lights, I was the beneficiary of a serendipitous opportunity. The day before scheduled studio time in New Orleans, Derek (Pretty Lights) had to rush home to Colorado and was unable to join the session. I found myself in a beautiful New Orleans studio, surrounded by a wealth of gifted local musical talent. There was only one thing to do: record.”
Sandunes’ global appeal doesn’t stop with Pretty Lights. She has opened for Bonobo at the Manchester International Festival, performing at London’s Barbican Centre under a commission from Warp Records, alongside appearances throughout India, including celebrated Magnetic Fields Festival and the prestigious National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai.
2018 will see Sandunes’ work on a new live A/V show, with an Indian tour in February and tour dates in Europe throughout the summer.
